Weight Loss Diets
Losing Weight Through Fasting
There are different versions of fasting diets. Some fasts allow no food, but
some juice. Other fasts are water only. Some fasts allow a few small fruits
during the day and some include broth. Fasting is a way people have claimed to
lose weight quickly and/or feel better.
Fasting is the key which unlocks the body's storehouses of energy. It reaches
every cell in the body, the inner organs and generates the Life Forces. People
who fast have long known that this practice has positive health benefits that
include improved energy and calmness of mind.
During the first 24 hours of a fast, the body is able to utilize its stored
carbohydrates—in the form of glycogen—to fuel essential body processes. When
glycogen reserves are depleted, fat becomes the preferred energy source, so that
protein (e.g., as found in muscle tissue) is partially spared.
Our bodies naturally detoxify every day. Detoxification is a normal body
process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys,
lungs, lymph glands, and skin. Our metabolic processes continuously dispose of
accumulated toxic matter.
Advocates believe that fasting periodically gives the body a break from
digestion and allows it to eliminate the toxins that cause disease, while
promoting healing and reversing the aging process. Studies indicate that fasting
helps health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, migraine headache, and
skin diseases. Acute illnesses such as colds and flu, colon disorders,
allergies, obesity, and respiratory diseases may also respond to fasting.
Proponents claim a one-day fast creates a clearer mental state and increased
energy. They believe a three-day fast rids the body of toxins and purifies the
blood, and that a long-term fast promotes healing, alleviates food allergies,
sheds pounds, and rebuilds the immune system.
It is possible to break a fast with any food available. whole fruits or whole
vegetables are best. The bulk in this food is necessary to promote both
peristalsis and mixing contractions in the stomach and intestines. Bulk is also
necessary to promote secretion of the digestive juices of the stomach and
intestines. The bulk of the food touching the stomach and intestinal walls is
the stimulus for muscular contraction as well as for proper digestive
secretions. Because of this, solid food is digested and handled more efficiently
than juices. It is held in the stomach and intestines long enough for proper
digestion and absorption, whereas juices, lacking this bulk, are hurried along
the digestive tract. Lacking in bulk, juices do not occasion strong peristaltic
waves and do not elicit the gastrocolic reflex as strongly as slid foods.
Because of these facts, when the fast is broken on juices the first bowel
movement after a fast is delayed. When solid foods are used to break the fast,
bowel movements are re-established much earlier.
